Education Day: May 23, 2014

On Friday, May 23, the Museum welcomed 74 students from Iona Academy and Char-Lan High School in Williamstown.  The Grade 7 students were treated to a wonderful day at the Sir John Johnson Manor House and the Museum as a tie-in to their curriculum.  They learned about the Loyalists and the Fur Trade, tasted food from Loyalist days, dressed up in period clothes, and saw and heard how farm implements, medicine, and education were about 200 years ago.  It was a bit of an eye-opener to some students to see how slates were used by Loyalist children and that there were no calculators!  Special thanks to Lynn Lafave for coordinating this event and to the volunteers who gave of their time and knowledge.IMG_3233IMG_3229IMG_3225IMG_3215IMG_3211IMG_3207IMG_3206

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

On November 16th, the Nor’Westers and Loyalist Museum held an ‘Appreciation Dinner’ to thank volunteers who pitched in at the museum over the past year.  Graham and Gail Wells hosted and cooked the dinner.   About 30 volunteers sat down to a delicious meal, heard a brief report on the year’s activities and the 2013 volunteers statistics.  Bill Gilsdorf, the new Glengarry History President was introduced and upcoming events were announced.
Many thanks to Graham and Gail for a wonderful evening and for all the time and dedication they devote to the Nor’westers and Loyalist Museum.  It is so appreciated!

Presentation: Vera Longtoe Sheehan

Fibre artist Vera Longtoe Sheehan gave a wonderful presentation at the museum, July 12, on traditional Wabanaki twined plant fibre textiles. Vera was accompanied by her daughter’s, Lina Longtoe, film footage. We would like to thank Vera and Lina for a wonderful presentation, and thank those of you who could join us. They gave us a unique glimpse into Wabanaki culture.
